International Collaboration: Students Redesign Public Spaces in Abtenau

This year, the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) returned to Campus Kuchl – an intensive, practice-oriented week where students, lecturers, and international partners work together on real-world projects. The aim of the programme is to transfer theoretical knowledge into practical application, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and develop innovative solutions for concrete challenges.

As part of the BIP, students collaborated closely with the Abtenau Tourism Association. Their task was to creatively redesign three key public spaces in the community:

  • the municipal garden
  • the forecourt of the Karkogel cable car valley station
  • the areas surrounding the mountain station up to the adjacent fire pond

The concepts developed were not only functional and aesthetically appealing but also tailored to the needs of visitors and the local community.

International and Interdisciplinary Teams

The workshop brought together 72 students and 11 professors from more than a dozen countries. Each team consisted of six members, combining diverse disciplines, experiences, and cultural perspectives. This multicultural and multidisciplinary approach encouraged lively discussions, creative ideas, and innovative solutions for the planned projects.

Hands-on Learning and Sustainable Outcomes

The programme week offered students the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge directly in practice – from analysing existing spaces to developing concepts and presenting final designs. The results provide valuable input for future planning and implementation of public spaces in Abtenau and highlight the importance of international exchange and collaborative work in shaping sustainable environments.
